LIVE MUSIC NIGHT: MAX, Shane Low & Wahana Deksu

In commemoration of Labour Day, we're spotlighting musical artists who work with unique techniques, instruments and genres.

The showcase brings together a full women’s Dikir Barat ensemble Wahana Deksu, introducing audiences to a culturally rooted musical tradition from Singapore’s heritage, brought into the pop world through energetic arrangements.

Alongside this, treat yourself to the live-looping talents of Shane Low. Witness real-time recording and playback, layered together to create complex, full-band arrangements right in front of you.

Completing the line-up is Max, a producer and soundscape artist who explores form agnosticism in his work ranging from live performances to creating sonic worlds.

Hands On: A Life Drawing Masterclass

A life drawing masterclass led by Kim Hian, one of Singapore's senior life models. Rather than the figure as a passive subject, this session foregrounds the craft behind the pose: the intention, the physical discipline, the choices made in real time.

The session opens with Kim Hian in conversation: why certain poses work, what he considers when holding a position, and what the practice has looked like over the years, including his time working with artist Teng Nee Cheong. From there, the session moves into drawing, with Kim Hian speaking through his poses as he holds them.

Set within Journey East's showroom, the space serves as a fitting backdrop: a celebration of craft and the invisible labour behind vintage furniture making.

I Dream of Singapore + Carnival of Poetry (NC16) + DIY Pocketbook Activity

Behind the metropolitan facade of Singapore is labour we are not meant to see. In a society driven by progress and success, the work that bolsters this image is often obscured from our eyes — hidden behind steel fences, blue tarps, and red-and-white signs that scream “DANGER—KEEP OUT!”

In a city continuously shaped and charted by migration, there seems to be an underlying tension between our narratives of success and the invisibility of labour. Despite being built on these movements, the city often forgets the people behind our progress, letting their stories slip past our sight.

Beyond statistics and numbers, what is often forgotten are the people’s lived experiences — their losses, adaptations, and connections to this land we call home. Through Lei Yuan Bin’s I Dream of Singapore (2019) and the poems from Migrant Writers of Singapore (MWS), join us as we take a deeper look at the lives that build our city and reconsider what it means to truly see them.
